Wild New Jersey Starts Right Here

Multi-level trails, ridge views, and real wilderness just outside West Milford's back door.

About Us

Four and a half stars from 271 hikers don't lie. Apshawa Preserve draws everyone from casual walkers to elevation-hungry trail runners, and the terrain backs up every bit of that reputation. The color-coded trail system, including the blue, green, and white blazes, lets you calibrate your effort before you ever lace up. Green and white both carry serious elevation, so first-timers are wise to start on blue and work their way up.

The preserve sits on Northwood Drive in West Milford, tucked into the Highlands region of Passaic County where the land rises sharply and the tree canopy closes in fast. Some trails dead-end and require a turnaround, which is actually a feature for anyone who wants solitude rather than a crowded loop. That quirk rewards explorers willing to push past the obvious path.

Reviewers consistently mention the water access as a hidden payoff, reachable if you know which junction to take. The varied terrain means a single visit can feel like two different hikes depending on which color you follow. Come for the views from the ridgeline. Stay because you forgot how good it feels to be genuinely off the grid.

What We Offer

Apshawa Preserve offers free public access to a network of multi-use hiking trails managed through the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. Trail difficulty ranges from gentle, flat stretches suitable for families and beginners to steep, rocky climbs that will challenge seasoned hikers. The blue trail is the most accessible entry point; the green and white routes demand more stamina and reward you with significant elevation gain and open ridge views.

Beyond the trails themselves, the preserve provides opportunities for wildlife observation, nature photography, and stream exploration. The route toward the water, referenced frequently by regulars, adds a destination-style payoff to what might otherwise feel like a pure endurance hike. Dogs are welcome on leash, making this a go-to spot for West Milford pet owners who want more than a neighborhood walk.

No fees, no reservations, no crowds at the trailhead on a weekday morning. Bring enough water, download an offline map before you lose cell signal, and leave the earbuds at home long enough to hear what the Highlands actually sound like.

"This is an underrated trail that gets a lot of flack from the reviews. I don't consider myself an experienced hiker, but I was able to follow the trails. One review mentioned a way to get to the waterfall but I would like to add to clarify: start on blue, then go orange but then when you get to green, you need to go left if you want the waterfalls, the ruins and the summit. If you go right on green, you will just get to the reservoir, and then IF you continue down green/red trail, then you can catch the summit and then the waterfalls/ ruins. Some reviewers said they couldn't find the falls, I hope this clarifies. The only real drawbacks, in my opinion, are that from the waterfalls to the summit, it gets very green if going midsummer and lots of plants with three leaves are rubbing against your legs (almost unavoidable). We stopped at a pharmacy and got ivy wash just in case after we left. Our whole hike we calculated was 3.15 miles (blue, orange, green to red/green, back to parking via blue). I did need my phone to help at times to orient myself. Another drawback is the sign that says not to walk on the dam which is asking to be walked on...we resisted...but it wasn't easy."

"A great spot for a hike of varied levels. You can choose easy or more strenuous. Green and white both have alot of elevation so be informed! If you turn right from blue to green the loop will have mostly down hill. If your knees hate down hill...go left from blue to green. But the ascend climb is steep for a while White trail going out from blue to red is mostly down...coming in from red to blue...up. Water tank ruins are amazing! Must see!!! Falls are running VERY light (almost not at all) due to drought conditions on 6-18-23. Happy hiking! Trail maintenance neededin 3 locations: 1. 2 trees have recently fallen across the bridge crossing the brook on blue trail. No damage to bridge but lots of debris on bridge and trail. 2. Deer fence down close to where green/red meets the metal bridge by dam. 3. Deer gate from red back to green is not making contact to lock and is therefore standing open. Hopefully, the parties that need to receive this info will."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee to visit Apshawa Preserve?

No. The preserve is free and open to the public, managed by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. No permits or reservations are required.

Which trail should a beginner start on?

The blue trail is the most accessible starting point. Green and white both involve substantial elevation gain, so first-time visitors are encouraged to get familiar with the terrain on blue before attempting those routes.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Apshawa Preserve but must be kept on a leash at all times. Clean up after your pet and stay on marked trails.

How do I find the water access that reviewers mention?

The water access is reachable from one of the trail junctions, though signage is minimal. Download an offline trail map before you arrive since cell service can be unreliable inside the preserve. Several recent reviews describe the route in detail.

What should I bring for a hike here?

Bring more water than you think you need, especially on green or white trails. Sturdy footwear with ankle support is recommended. Download an offline map, tell someone your planned route, and pack a light layer since ridge temperatures drop quickly.

Do some trails end without looping back?

Yes. Several trails terminate rather than forming a complete loop, so you will need to retrace your steps on those sections. This is worth knowing in advance so you budget your time and energy for the return walk.

Where exactly is the preserve located?

The preserve is accessed from 4 Northwood Drive in West Milford, NJ 07480, in the Highlands region of Passaic County. More information is available at njconservation.org/apshawapreserve.htm.
